GIRLS BASKETBALL -

Cy-Fair girls defeat Westside 51-38

An 11-point advantage at halftime was what the Cy-Fair girls basketball team needed to pull out a 51-38 victory over visiting Westside Tuesday night.

Bobcat forward Rhian Rogan scored 10 points and also led the way defensively in the winning effort.

“She definitely was our key as far as getting that defensive rebound and kicking out quick for our out and trying to get our run going,” Cy-Fair coach Ann Roubique said. “She did a real good job. I was yelling and screaming at all of them to block out.”

Roubique was speaking of her team gave up 12 offensive rebounds in first half. Both teams kept constant pressure on with the full and half-court press. Though Cy Fair maintained a 10-point lead through most of the game, the Wolves battled back with defense to cut the lead by six on a few occasions.

“We did okay on that, but in the first half we had (I think) 13 turnovers,” Roubique said of Westside’s full-court press. “But we did make some plays when we needed to, but we did not do a good job consistently of handling the pressure they were putting on us.”

In the second half the Bobcats came out early scoring several points in transition. The Wolves kept the game within reach, but never cut into the led significantly. The fourth quarter was plenty of trading baskets and hard-core defense. With players in foul trouble on both sides, it was the Bobcats that pulled out the preseason victory.

Volleyball playoffs heating up

We are through one round of the 2007 volleyball playoffs and so far, there haven't been too many surprise teams. Cypress Woods, a first year program, advanced past Katy Taylor, but I'm not sure too many people were shocked because Cy Woods has been playing well all season. Clements knocked out Pearland and even though Pearland was the higher ranked team, there is never any way to know who will come out on top when 23-5A teams and 24-5A teams battle because those two districts are really strong.

The area round should be exciting. A few things to watch for: 1. If Cy-Fair and Memorial each win their next game, they would meet next Tuesday- those are the top two Region III teams and one will be gone in the Regional Quarterfinals. 2. Magnolia in Region II has a tough one against Round Rock McNeil. If the Bulldogs get past that, they could be the Region II favorite for state. 3. Dulles and Clear Creek have the two best defensive squads in the area. Watch for those two to be bracket busters this season.

Volleyball: Cy-Fair sparked by Ogwumike sisters

The Cy-Fair Lady Bobcats have a chance to pull off a rare double and win Class 5A state championships in volleyball and basketball in the same calendar year.

The reason? There are two in sisters Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike.

"They really are such great leaders and amazing athletes," said Cy-Fair volleyball coach Donna Benotti of the 6-foot-1 1/2 senior Nneka and 6-foot-2 sophomore Chiney.

"But more than that," Benotti said, "is that they are such great team players. They are all about team. They are very humble. They always put team first. It is not all individuals. They are amazing athletes. They can do so many things that other athletes just can't do. But they are all about the team."

A year ago, Nneka and Chiney guided the Lady Bobcats to the Class 5A state basketball championship game before losing to Rockwall. Both teams finished ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation.

"I think basketball is pretty much their real love," Benotti said. "They are awesome at volleyball, but even more so at basketball. They play basketball year round. They just play volleyball for the school a couple months a year. But we are so glad they want to be a part of our program. They have helped us out so much."

Entering the final week of the season, Cy-Fair was 28-2 overall and 11-0 in District 17-5A following a win over Cypress Falls (25-17, 25-13, 25-18) as Cambrey Oehler has 13 kills.

The Lady Bobcats, who have not lost to a Houston area team, are ranked No. 1 in the Houston area and among the top five teams in the state.

"I don't think there is any jealousy toward them from any of our players," Benotti said. "Their personalities are so humble.

"Nneka is the class president. She was a homecoming queen candidate. She is such a class act. It is really hard to harbor any jealousy.

"And they are both very close and very caring toward one another. They are both inspiring each other in matches and what they need to do to be stronger and successful. There is no jealousy between those two. I don't see any at all. They are really best friends."

Nneka, who won't turn 18 until July 2, said she loves playing sports with her sister.

"It is a lot of fun," she said. "We play the same position, so we practice against each other. It is competitive, but not to the point where it is serious competition."

Nneka, who averaged more than 20 points and 10 rebounds per game a year ago, is considering basketball offers from Stanford, Duke, Notre Dame and Baylor.

"I don't know when I will decide. I am just taking it one game at a time," said Nneka, who is No. 43 in a graduating class of 1,000. "It would be nice to sign before the season. But I am not trying to look too far ahead. I just want to concentrate on volleyball right now. I think we have a good chance at being successful in the postseason."

Nneka said Kingwood, Magnolia, Cypress Woods and Cinco Ranch could give the Lady Bobcats trouble in Region III.

"Everybody gets fired up to play us," Nneka said.

Nneka said she would eventually like to be a pediatrician or go into sports medicine.

"I don't know about the WNBA,"Nneka said. "I want to play (basketball) overseas. But whatever opportunity comes, I will take it."

Chiney said coach Benotti is a big reason for the volleyball team's success.

"Coach Benotti is great," Chiney said. "We have great chemistry. She has a great balance between work, fun and having a competitive attitude."

Chiney said she is going to miss her sister next season.

"That will be rough. We are best friends,"Chiney said. "She is a fun teammate, too. We share aspects of our games, but we have contrasts, too. I have grown into the way she plays, and I also differ in the way she plays."

Chiney said the two were always close growing up.

"We have always been together," Chiney said. "I believe 100 percent I will end up at the same college she does. I just like playing with her as a teammate and as my sister."

Chiney said Nneka always keeps her in control on the court.

"She helps me cool down," she said with a laugh. "I am more of a hot head at times."

Chiney, who will turn 16 in March, believes the Lady Bobcats can win state in volleyball and basketball.

"I believe it is attainable," Chiney said. "It is going to take a lot of hard work and effort. We have great leadership and a great team. I am excited to see how it ends up."

How disappointing was it to lose in last year's state title game?

"I was a freshman at the time, so it was all very vague,"Chiney said. "I think I was a little overwhelmed by the atmosphere. But we were still just one call or one point away. It was heartbreaking. We are ready to go back with a vengeance."

Chiney, who is ranked No. 8 in her class, and Nneka also play together on the Cy-Fair Shock AAU team.

"This summer, we toured with Nike," Chiney said. "That was fun. We went to Oregon, Georgia and North Carolina. We played against the top-tier competition. But it was a challenge. I really enjoy a challenge."

Sometimes when life deals you a rough hand, you look around and find something to cling to. You look for a reason to keep going, a reason to keep your spirits up, a reason to keep trying. Cy-Fair football has always been something important, but in 1972, The Bobcats weren’t just something, they were everything. It was his senior year: Football season. The lights, the crowds, the excitement, the injuries. We went into the season with the number two quarterback in the state, said Robert Tidmore, a linebacker for the Bobcats in 1972. Today he coaches swimming and teaches BCIS an hour each day, but when he attended this school as a student, football was his life and this season was going to be the season to end all others. At the first game, the team stepped onto the field and in a made-for-the-movies moment, Kenny Pridgeon, the number two quarterback in the state, took his place on the starting line.
